- Story Text: Floods caused by torrential rains in Indonesia's capital killed two people on Monday (October 25), Metro TV reported on Tuesday (October 26).
The downpour engulfed parts of the city with up to 75 centimeter of water, causing traffic and travel chaos at the airport. The rain stopped on Tuesday but areas remained under water.
Metro TV reported that a women was killed when she was swept away by flood waters and another man died when he walked into a fallen power line.
"The weather is very bad these days, we have to be on alert all the time. I am a little bit worried," said Mus Mualim a resident in Ciledug.
Others think the government should do more work to help.
"I hope the government would do something to minimize this," said a resident Heri Yadi.
There were no reports of deaths in Jakarta on Monday after floodwaters rose to 20-50 centimetres.
After the 2007 floods that killed about 50 people, many due to electrocution, the then governor of Jakarta said the city administration needed more help from the central the government to deal with the annual hazard.
Indonesia's capital of about 10 million is often flooded in the rainy season and it can also be inundated by high tides in areas near the coast and in low-lying districts. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
