East Timor President Xanana Gusmao on Wednesday (February 13) urged Reinado's supporters to remain calm amid rumours that his followers planned to seize his body.
"On behalf of the government I call the youth in the country, the supporters of Alfredo and all of people in East Timor to remain calm. Let us respect him," said Gusmao in a news conference.
The father of the slain rebel leader Alfredo Reinado also attended the press conference. Reinado's father, Victor Alves told journalists that the bloodshed should end with the death of Reinado.
"My son is gone. He is dead already. I would like to ask Alfredo's supporters to remain calm. We will not resolve the problem with blood. Do not create any problem," Alves said.
Security was tight at the national hospital as Reinado's body was prepared to be taken to his family home in Dili.
Supporters continuously turned up at the house in DIli for the procession of Reinado's body and one of his man, who was also killed in the attack.
Fully armed Portuguese Republican National Guards were deployed with armoured vehicles outside the hospital while East Timorese troops lined the streets nearby.
Australian troops continued to arrive in Dili on Wednesday to reinforce international peacekeepers and the 1,600-strong United Nations police detachment, who are enforcing a state of emergency declared in the wake of Monday's attacks. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
