- Story Text: Aid workers in eastern Aleppo were distributing the last available food rations on Thursday (November 10) as the quarter of a million people besieged in the Syrian city entered what is expected to be a cruel winter, U.N. humanitarian adviser Jan Egeland said.
Some families in the rebel-held area have not had food distributions for several weeks and food prices are skyrocketing, he said. Around 300 sick and wounded require medical evacuation, he added.
"The report we have now, from within east Aleppo is that, the last food rations are being distributed as we speak. There will not be more to distribute next week. Some families have not had any distributions, families in need of relief have not had any distributions now for several weeks already," Jan Egeland told reporters in Geneva.
Egeland said he was hopeful of a deal on a four-part humanitarian plan the United Nations sent to all parties to the conflict several days ago. The plan covers delivery of food and medical supplies, medical evacuations and access for health workers.
"I do believe we will be able to avert mass hunger this winter. I think we will be able to get both supplies in and evacuations out and none of the two should be conditioned on the other he said, adding that he had the clear impression that Russia would continue its pause in air operations over the northern city," Egeland said, adding he had the clear impression that Russia would continue its pause in air strikes over the northern city.
"We are in continuous contact with Russian diplomats and military and it is my clear impression that they are willing to continue pause in air operations and that they actively looking at and I really hope to have soon green light for our four humanitarian initiatives as part of this larger one", Egeland said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
