Supporters of Hillary Clinton drowned their sorrows on Tuesday night (November 8) after Republican Donald Trump stunned the world by defeating the heavily favored Democratic nominee in the U.S. presidential election, ending eight years of Democratic rule and sending the United States on a new, uncertain path.
At a bar in downtown Los Angeles, many Clinton supporters watching Trump give his victory speech on television were visibly upset.
"It just it just shows the integrity of America. It's not even, like, it's more than just the presidential race right now it's like that just shows that somebody that like literally stands for everything that's wrong with this country can go and be president of the United States and then there not be a problem," said Elyse Thoms, adding, "I'm moving to Canada."
Television networks projected Republicans would retain control of the U.S. House of Representatives, where all 435 seats were up for grabs. In the U.S. Senate, the party also put up an unexpectedly tough fight to protect its majority.
Jason Martinez, from Pico Rivera, was worried about the consequences of Republican control of Congress and the White House.
"He's going to have at least one Supreme Court justice that he's going to get to nominate, he's going to have a GOP House, going to have a GOP Senate, he's going to be able to railroad through anybody he wants. And the decisions they make are going to have, you know, long lasting ramifications over two, three generations. It's crazy," he said.
In Las Vegas, Nevada, what started in the early evening hours as a celebratory watch party for Clinton ended in distress and disbelief as it became clear Trump had won?
"For the first time in my life I'm ashamed to be American and I never thought I would say that. I'm a veteran, I served my country for a lot of years and I'm ashamed of my fellow Americans tonight," said Clinton supporter Mary Durgam.
For people like Jacqueline Guerra, the main concern is how Americans will be portrayed outside of the United States.
"I feel very sad because I don't know what our future brings, what people from other countries are going to think, how would they see us. We are humble, we are caring, we show our love and he only show all the bad things, it's all bad and it hurts," said Guerra, a hotel worker who lined up for hours to gain access to the watch party hosted at the Aria Hotel and Casino in the Las Vegas Strip.
Trump collected enough of the 270 state-by-state electoral votes needed to win a four-year term that starts on Jan. 20, taking battleground states where presidential elections are traditionally decided, U.S. television networks projected.
Trump's victory marked a frustrating end to the presidential aspirations of Clinton, 69, who failed for the second time to be elected the first woman U.S. president.
In a posting on Twitter during Tuesday evening, she acknowledged a battle that was unexpectedly tight given her edge in opinion polls going into Election Day. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
