The Canadian pop singer said that he was excited about Bruno Mars.
"I haven't seen him live and I'm one of the biggest fans of his performance I think it's incredible and I'm excited," he said.
Hosting the the 23rd edition of MTV's European awards show was Brooklyn singer-songwriter Bebe Rexha, who said it was like her childhood wish had come true.
"I am so excited to be here, I watched MTV as a girl with my mother and I always dreamed to be part of an awards show or make music videos and be an artist and to be here tonight as an upcoming artist is just such an honour. And just honestly I am so grateful it so amazing and my parents are here with me and it's just all coming true and I couldn't be more happy," she said.
Disco group DNCE were nominated for two awards and on the red carpet the band's frontman Joe Jonas said he was supportive of little brother Nick Jonas - despite the two both being in chart contention with new material being released.
"I don't know if we look at it as a competition we only are just so supportive of each other and we're like and from far away we watch every move and it feels good.."
Swedish singer Zara Larsson was appreciative of the opportunity to get on stage, promising a special and lavish performance.

Veterans rockers Green Day were at the awards to receive the MTV Global Icon award and perform their song 'American Idiot' which lead singer Billy Joel Armstrong said was accordant with the current state of American politics.
"Right now it feels more like American heart attack, so it's definitely relevant," he said. He added that "the big thing is to get the right kind of liberal brain inside the Supreme Court".
British pop star Charli XCX, who was presenting at the awards, was more outspoken about her political views on the red carpet ahead the show.
"Obviously Donald Trump is the worst and yeah that's all I really have to say, I think if he wins it will be really really absolutely disastrous and so yeah 'I'm with her' one hundred percent," she said, referring to Hillary Clinton.
