- Story Text:Residents of Santiago making their daily commutes were greeted by a dozen giant-sized fried eggs splattered around a central plaza as part of an eye-catching pop-up, 3D art installation on Tuesday (November 08).
Public spaces around the Chilean capital have been transformed as part of an artistic expression festival called "Hecho en Casa" (Made at home).
Dutch artist Henk Hofstra, who named his work Art-Eggccident, placed a series of installations in the form of giant fried eggs, measuring 10 meters in diameter, around Santiago's Plaza Italia causing curious passers-by to stop and have a look.
Many said they were surprised by the sheer size and colour of the art exhibition which they also found humours.
Fifty-three-year-old, massage therapist, Jaime, joined in the fun.
"I think it's interesting to see these exhibitions set up in Santiago. Apart from being a novel idea, the fact that they are fried eggs; if someone wanted to come by with a giant spatula, they could," Jaime said.
The eggs also provided the perfect backdrop for selfies and pictures to be shared on social media.
Forty-five-year-old homemaker, Viviana, said it was a novel idea.
"Something new, original, striking and distracting, too, so that people are distracted a little from the daily routine over here," Viviana said.
Children, including as nine-year-old Christopher, liked the exhibit. "Nice, big," he said.
Brazilian tourist Tatiana Aravena, who is forty-years-old and has been living in Chile for a month, said exhibitions such as this one, added zest to life.
"It's a very nice because it mixes pop art with everyday life. We eat eggs every day, we see egg whites. Nature is so beautiful and it transforms something we go by when we leave the subway station... when we see something beautiful, it refreshes us," Aravena said.
Finally, nineteen-year-old student, Daniela, said it was unusual to see art exhibitions such as this one in Santiago.
"It's entertaining, different and art installations like this are not common around here," Daniela said.
Hofstra, who lives and works in Drachten, the Netherlands, has cultivated his work in different formats such as painting and the designing of art works, with an emphasis on large-scale pieces set in public spaces.
Born in the 1950s, Hofstra studied art and design at the Artibus Art Academy in the city of Utrecht.
In the last ten years, Hofstra has been awarded prizes for different artistic projects in public spaces. His work has been widely disseminated by specialised media, magazines and important Internet sites devoted to public art. His most notable projects are The Blue Road, Carcreditcrisis, Ants Invasion and Above Water.
