- Story Text: California's Manhattan Beach prides itself on being cool and laid-back, but on Tuesday (November 8) residents set aside their normal pursuit of the "Endless Summer," focusing instead on politics as they lined up early and often outside a lifeguard tower turned election polling place to cast their vote.
And while California and its 55 electoral votes are pretty much a sure-thing for Democrat Hillary Clinton, the acrimonious battle between Clinton and her rival Republican Donald Trump is one that has stirred passion among voters.
"I think we are all trying to make a difference to get out the vote and do what you have to do for your responsibility to your country," said Michelle Icaza, one of the many who arrived early to cast their ballot. "I think California is definitely going to be for Hillary vote."
There is a feeling among many of the voters that there is a lot at stake in this presidential race.
"I think there is a lot of interest in what is going to happen," said Theresa Salk, who arrived to vote with her three dogs in tow. "Is this really going to affect our economy? Is this really going to affect our future? And I think it will. I think this is a very big deal overall."
That interest in the outcome of the election is what kept volunteers at the Manhattan Beach polling station busy all morning thanks to the strong voter turnout.
"We're probably at 9 am, two hours in," said Stan Johnson, a longtime polling station volunteer in discussing the strong early turnout. "We are probably two-thirds of what the last election was for the whole day for our precinct. So, yes we are very busy."
Across the rest of the country, Hillary Clinton held a narrow lead in opinion polls over Republican Donald Trump on Tuesday, as millions of Americans are expected to vote for the next president after one of the most negative campaigns in U.S. history. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
