- Story Text: Uruguay practiced on Monday (November 7) ahead of its upcoming World Cup qualifier against Ecuador.
Uruguay will face Ecuador on Thursday (November 10) but expects to compete without one of their top players. Striker Edinson Cavani was injured recently while playing for Paris Saint-Germain and his status is still up in the air.
"In the case of Edi [Cavani], he felt some pain during the match he played in. It wasn't when he made the goal but some time before. There was contact with the people from Paris Saint Germain over the team's health. After receiving the images that they send where there was no confirmation of a fibrillar rupture which is what worried us and after there was some contact or some suggestion from the people of Paris Saint Germain to do the recovery there and the player completely refused it," said coach, Oscar Tabarez.
Ecuador won the teams' first meeting, 2-1, and Tabarez was preparing for a challenge.
"It's not going to be easy, is it? In this qualifier, Ecuador got a lot of visitor points, more than 50 percent visitor. So it is talked about as an important team and and the beginning of the qualifier, for several days, it was the best team. So, beyond, it could have difficulties and it is missing some very important players. It is the same team, the same coach on the same bases. We are going with the goal of winning the match but also with the balance and peacefulness that we will get through difficult moments," he said.
Meanwhile, team captain Diego Godin recognized the strengths and weaknesses of Ecuador.
"It wouldn't be respectful to the rival to say that I am calm. We are aware that we are facing a great team. We are aware that they have important weaknesses but we have the maximum respect for our rival and we know that it is a strong team that has great players and I believe that is the best way to prepare, to expect the best of the rival even though it has important weaknesses," he said.
Ecuador currently stands third in the standings, three points behind Uruguay.
