  • Story Text: A British businessman allegedly abducted in the United States by a romantic rival posing as an FBI agent has been found dead in New Jersey.
    FBI agents found the body of missing British computer consultant Paul Gale, 28, about two miles (three km) from the New Jersey home of the man suspected of abducting him in handcuffs from a motel in the northern Kentucky town of Florence on April 17.
    Gale's body was found on Wednesday evening in Brick, N.J., hometown of Greg Marcinski, 23, police said.Gale, who was in Kentucky on a business trip, had been dating Marcinski's former girlfriend in New Jersey for about a month.
    Marcinski, a volunteer emergency medical technician, flashed his badge and false computer-generated FBI credentials to gain access to Gale's room, the Asbury Park Press newspaper in New Jersey reported on Thursday, citing federal documents.
    The report said Marcinski identified himself as "Special Agent Trimble," handcuffed Gale and put him in the front seat of his grandmother's Buick he had driven 800 miles (1,290 km) from New Jersey to confront his love rival.
    Gale's girlfriend Darla Guidie, who had previously dated Marcinski, told the FBI that Marcinski produced the bogus identity on his personal computer and "bragged that he had gotten the format for the phony FBI credentials off of the Internet," the Asbury Park Press reported.
    Marcinski of Red Bank, New Jersey has been charged with abducting Gale and impersonating an FBI agent.He was being held without bail in the Monmouth County Jail where he is awaiting extradition to Kentucky.
    On Wednesday, dozens of federal agents and police officers, some of them clad in hip waders, searched a swampy wooded area of Brick for several hours.It was not clear how authorities knew to search the area.The British Foreign Office in London said Gale's body was found in a swamp.
    A federal affidavit alleges that Marcinski had become increasingly upset because his former girlfriend Guidie was dating Gale, a computer programmer and native of Erdington, England.
    Marcinski admitted that he picked up Gale at the motel and said he drove around with him for a couple of hours, then dropped him off at a hotel parking lot near the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
    Gale was reported missing by Odete Vieira of Long Branch, N.J., a friend and business associate.
