- Story Text: A quarter of us know someone who was unfaithful on their stag or hen night. Half of us say that mothers cause arguments by meddling with wedding plans. A third of all men admit they've been drunk at every wedding they've ever attended.
These are only some of the facts that researchers for the world's first Wedding TV channel found out when they tested the UK market for interesting wedding facts. And that's not all. In the UK alone, the average wedding costs around 16,000 pounds. There are over 30 wedding magazines, and the annual wedding industry is worth around 5.3 billion pounds.
So with these facts, it seems all of us are or have been touched by a wedding, reason enough for television executives to believe in a market for a Wedding Channel that deals solely with the dramatic, and often traumatic effects of weddings and relationships.
Marc Conneely, Chief Executive of Wedding TV, says: "The great thing about the Wedding TV idea, it's an entertainment channel an, entertainment channel that appeals to people whether they're married or not so we kind of came up with the initial idea and expanded on that."
He adds: "In the UK alone there's almost 350,000 weddings that take place each year and you've got over 100 guests, you're talking over 40 million people who will attend a wedding each year so it touches many people's lives. So whether you're there as the bride or the groom, you're still actively involved in the wedding business."
Wedding TV will be on-air 24 hours, 7 days a week with programmes as diverse as "Wedding Secrets", "e-Love", "The Real Sex in the City" and "Race to the Altar".
It's an entertainment channel designed primarily for a female audience, although Conneely believes, there's something in it for everyone:
"It's captivating, it's compulsive viewing so the bulk of the market will certainly be females but we feel the whole family can watch the channel."
Wedding TV showcases a mix of reality TV, documentaries, and game shows and executives hope, it's this mixture that produces the ultimate recipe for success.
So what do ordinary people think about Wedding TV? Would they watch it?
"No probably not, I don't think it's my type of show I'm afraid." "Yes definitely I would yes. Because if I get married I don't want anything to go wrong." "There's a lot of these programmes mushrooming so it would be fun to watch for those who want to get married so they know what they should be doing. "Yeah I'd probably watch out of curiosity, then if it's interesting I might continue to watch it." "No, I'm married anyway so, if they had something called Divorce TV I think that would be more profitable."
