- Story Text: One day after receiving an official document from the Electoral Commission confirming his victory in Poland's presidential elections, Bronislaw Komorowski announced that Wednesday (July 7) would be his final day as Speaker of the lower house of parliament.
Parliamentarians applauded as Komorowski beat the Speaker's staff for the final time, after attending his final parliamentary session in the role.
"I will submit my resignation to the two person council of the chamber. I will resign as the speaker of parliament, as part of a sequence of events," Komorowski told a news conference.
The sequence of events included resigning as acting president, a role he automatically took on after the death of President Lech Kaczynski in April. He also stood down as an MP and relinquished is party membership to PO (Civic Platform), the ruling party in government.
Komorowski formally assumes his duties as head of state after a swearing-in ceremony likely to be held on August 7.
In last Sunday's (July 5) election run-off Komorowski won 53 percent of the vote against the twin brother of the former president Jaroslaw Kaczynski's 47 percent.
His election ended an extraordinary period in Polish politics following the plane crash in Russia that killed many top state officials as well as Lech Kaczynski.
It has also consolidated the domination of Polish politics by Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his pro-euro, pro-business party. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
