- Story Text: Famous British actor Adrian Paul, best known for his role as the 400-year-old Immortal Duncan Macleod, is filming the fifth 'Highlander' movie, 'The Source' in Lithuania.
The new adventure is the first feature in a trilogy of films which will chronicle the origins of the Immortals.
'The Source' tells the story of the Immortals as they quest to locate the Holy Grail of their world.
which started with the 1996 in starring and Sean Connery, before to the sreies running from 1992 to 1998.
Director Leonard said he looks forward to now bringing the story back in the form a a feature film again.
"Look, the 'Highlander's' series is the fantastic, you know, mythology, a fantastic story to build up on. It's been around for twenty years and there are very few franchises that exist in the world that have that kind of longevity, so to tell a new story, tell a new myth with Highlander has been a great honour for me," said Leonard.
Adrian Paul, who is also one of the producers of the film, also said he wanted to bring the quality of the series to the big screen.
"Because I always wanted to do "Highlander" film that I thought had the quality of the series. I don't think that last one "Highlander 4" had that, it was a little bit confusing for me, I think the story was a little bit convoluted and I wanted to bring something that had the heart of what the series had," he said.
For Leonard, Adrian Paul
"Well, Adrian Paul, you know he is Highlander for so many people, because of the longevity of the TV series and he was very, very instrumental in the story process and, also, all the fight choreography he is really actively involved, he is not just starring in the movie, he is being the producer on this and he actually directed some of the TV episodes, so he has been a real partner on this for me, it's been great to work with him," he said.
The Source Jim Byrnes, Peter Wingfield, Cristian Solimeno, Thom Fell, Stephen Rahman Hughes and Stephen Wight is co-star in the film which is rumoured to be going straight to DVD next year will be released by Lions Gate.
According to Leonard, audiences can expect to see more Hollywood movies with Lithuanian backdrops, as the country has the advantage of being able to offer cinematic locations at irresistable prices.
"Because Prague and Budapest are becoming more expensive, Lithuania is the 'new kid on the block', it's sort of like the next place where Hollywood will go. Hollywood will always go to the places where they can get more production value on the screen for fewer dollars and Lithuania, right now, is the cheapest place you can go to and make films in Eastern Europe, because it is new one," explained the director.
Filming of 'The Source', which started in Lithuania last October, is expected to finish on Wednesday (December 7, 2005). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
