Kuwait celebrated the opening of a new cultural centre in the capital, complete with a 2000-seat opera house.
The opening ceremony for the Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre, attended by Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, featured performances, dancing and music.
The deputy minister of Amiri Diwan Affairs, Sheikh Ali Jarrah al Sabah, said in a pre-recorded message broadcast on a big screen that it was a "momentous day in the history of Kuwait".
Local media reported that the centre, which spans 214,000 square metres and hosts several facilities within its four buildings, including a cinema and a library for historic documents, cost $750 million to construct.
"This building where we stand now consists of three theatres, the big theatre which we were in is for 2000 people, the second is for 700 people and the smallest is for 200 people. The music building consists of a theatre for 1200 people and another theatre for 600 people. The third is the building for conferences, it consists of a conference hall and cinema for 500 people. The last building is the centre for historical documents which belongs to the Amiri Diwan," said Niyaz Mohammad Hussain Khajah, Assistant Undersecretary for Engineering Affairs in the Amiri Diwan.
She explained that the building's geometric design was inspired by Islamic architecture, with parts constructed in titanium.
