- Story Text: Traffic police trying to issue parking tickets in the Chinatown district of Milan on Thursday (April 12) were met with protests by the local community and called in riot police for support.
More than a hundred members of the mainly Chinese-born community, angered by what they called discrimination, took to the streets, many waving Chinese flags.
As tempers frayed, riot police pushed back a section of the crowd, hitting many with batons.
Residents retaliated by throwing plastic bottles and small rubbish bins.
One group of riot-helmeted plainclothes police were seen restraining a man with a baton on a car bonnet.
At least one car was overturned in the scuffle and several people bleeding from head wounds were seen walking dazed down the street after a police charge.
Some residents shouted at the police. "You just want to send away all the Chinese population. Where is Italy's humanity?" shouted one, "Stop them but don't kill them, don't kill them" shouted another.
At least seven people were injured and several people were arrested.
