- Story Text: Spain's national court granted on Friday (June 17) a close associate of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak a bail fee of 27 million euros, one of the largest in Spain's history, after he was arrested on an Interpol warrant.
Hussein Salem was arrested in Madrid accused of fraud and speculation.
Spanish police froze millions of euros in bank accounts, as well as property and luxury vehicles linked to the businessman, who appeared in a Madrid court to face corruption charges.
Salem was transferred to the Gregoria Maranon hospital after he felt unwell following questioning by the judge.
One of Mubarak's closest aides, he was arrested on Thursday (June 16) night on suspicion of squandering public funds by selling gas to Israel below market prices.
Salem's son and and another assistant were also arrested, police said.
Spanish officials froze assets of more than 32.5 million euros ($46.03 million) in cash, properties in Madrid and Marbella worth 10 million euros and five high-end vehicles, a police statement said.
Salem and his son Khaled also have Spanish citizenship, the court said.
A report from Egyptian state news agency MENA said Salem fled the country on February 3, eight days before Mubarak was forced to step down, without citing sources. Salem was a major shareholder in East Mediterranean Gas (EMG).
Egyptian opposition groups had long complained that EMG had been selling gas at preferential prices to Israel and other countries, which cost Egypt billions of dollars. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
