- Story Text: Indonesian authorities prepare a Javan Leopard (Panthera Pardus Melas), which was caught in an animal trap last month, for its release back into its natural habitat.
A Javan Leopard caught in an animal trap last month was taken to its home in the protected forest area of Pandeglang, Banten Provence in Indonesia in preparation for its release into the wild.
The leopard received at 10 centimetre long cut along its waist when it was caught in a trap placed by locals from a near-by village hoping to catch wild deer and boar.
Some of the residents of Saninten village escorted the leopard and wildlife authorities deep into the forest to a larger enclosure where the endangered animal could readapt to its natural surroundings for a few days before its final release.
"The leopard was caught in the trap placed by locals in the village last month. He was injured in his waist. We took him to animal rehabilitation center in Bogor, West Java. When his condition improved we sent him back to his habitat," said Tata from the centre for Natural Resource Conservation (BKSDA.) Observers said the leopard's aggressive temperament on entering the enclosure showed he was ready to return to the wild.
The Javan leopard can only be found on Java island in Indonesia. It's population is listed as endangered due to poaching and habitat loss. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
