- Story Text: Miles Kane is making a name for himself as a solo artist after a successful partnership with The Last Shadow Puppets, the band he founded with Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner.
British singer Miles Kane is ready to step out of the shadows of good friend and The Last Shadow Puppets bandmate Alex Turner, the irreverent lead singer of the Arctic Monkeys.
The 24-year-old Kane, who's previous band also included The Rascals, wants to make a name for himself as a solo artist and following the end of a tour with the Shadow Puppets last year, the Liverpudlian singer was looking to take on a new project to continue on his musical trajectory.
Becoming a solo artist, he admitted recently, wasn't on his list of things to do, but in the unpredictable world of rock n roll, he found himself without a band.
He signed to Sony's Columbia Records and released two catchy singles "Come Closer" featuring a music video in the style of "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" complete with British gangsters and strippers, in this case, a scantily-clad and gyrating Daisy Lowe.
The second is "Inhaler". While the song may not be based on his asthmatic experience, the track's title does ironically refer to his physical ailment.
He began working with Gruff Rhys of the Super Furry Animals and Dan The Automater, who's previously worked with Gorillaz and Kasabian, a band Miles has often been compared to, with his publicist calling him a "One Man Kasabian".
"They probably got that from the song Come Closer, I guess. I suppose with it having the hooks it's in that world maybe. And that was where we wrote that song, after going to a Kasabian gig in Liverpool. I remember it was about a year ago, I went to a Kasabian gig in Liverpool and I wanted a tune with a 'la la la' or a 'woah woah woah' or an 'ah ah ah'. I didn't do a 'la la' I just did an 'ah' and a 'woah'," Kane told Reuters Television.
Critics have questioned his talent in the Shadow Puppets, with many music journalists in awe of Turner and his rock n roll lifestyle, complete with model girlfriend Alexa Chung.
But Kane said despite their friendship, recognition as a solo singer was something he had to pursue.
"Obviously you want to do it for yourself and yeah I suppose which is always important you got to to do that (make a name for yourself) a lot of people out there think you're his best mate and you can't play guitar so I wanted to make a record that if there is anyone that thinks that, well here (referring to album)," he said.
Kane said he wouldn't knock down anything he's done as a singer, especially with the Shadow Puppets, as he put it down to experience.
"Everything I've done, everything you've done, you're 24 now and everything you've done to this point, right now sitting here with you, has all helped you mentally in life and in music. I'd never knock anything because without anything I wouldn't be here. Puppets was at the most because it was the most popular if you want to say, so I'll always thank that and love that," he said.
Also on the album is Noel Gallagher, formerly of Oasis, who Kane met by chance.
"I've only met him a couple times. Again, I've only met him a couple times and press blow these things up. You can do an interview for a hour and they'll just take that as a headline. All it was was that I was mixing my record and he came down for a coffee and I was going to put these harmonies on the song he liked and heup doing it. So it's just a nice little sort of thing," he said.
Kane will be supporting Liam Gallagher's Beady Eye in a sell out tour in March and the Arctic Monkeys in hometown gigs in Sheffield in the summer.
The album "Colour Of The Trap" also features Kasabian's own guitarist Sergio Pizzorno and will be released on April 25. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
