- Story Text: Donny and Marie Osmond's Christmas show "Donny & Marie - A Broadway Christmas" had its premiere in New York on Thursday (December 9).
It was the first time the sibling entertainers performed together on Broadway, despite careers that span over four decades. In a sold-out theater the pair sang Christmas carols along with their hits from the past. The show's opening night fell on the same day as Donny's 53rd birthday and after the performance Marie surprised her brother with a giant cupcake.
Asked what his feelings were after the premiere, Donny said: "First of all it is a relief to have the first one over but the way the first one went exceeded our expectations."
Marie agreed that she, too, had been worried about the opening night, and said she was happy that everything went smoothly.
"At the end it came together and we will do some editing and cuts, always because it's kind of like preview -- we have three days to pull it together and I think it went well," she said.
"We had a few mishaps I fell off stage, and usually she pushes me off-stage but I actually fell off stage. But you know, when little things like that happen you just have fun with it and just enjoy it," Donny added.
Donny Osmond began his career at the age of 5, and has earned 33 gold records throughout his career. Marie Osmond has done Broadway productions in the past, including a successful run of "The King and I" where she starred as the lead "Anna."
As a pair, Donny and Marie hosted a television variety series between 1976 and 1979 titled the "Donny and Marie Show," and a talkshow in the late 90's titled "Donny & Marie." Marie said that she was nervous whether after so many years, people still wanted to see them on stage.
"We were just so thrilled that the tickets are selling and I was happy to see that the people were enjoying the show," she said.
"That was the most important thing to me because we wanted to do a Christmas show, but people wanted to see like, you know "Puppy Love" and "Paper Roses" and some of the hits and a little dancing because I am the better dancer but we try to add elements that people would remember and have some warm and fuzzies and some Donny and Marie humor," she said.
"And what's really interesting, when we first hit the stage tonight everybody is like -- what are you going to do? That kind of expression on their faces. By the end, everybody was just standing with smiles on their faces and everybody had a great time," Donnie added.
Asked what their own holiday plans were, Donnie said, "we're going to be doing shows, all through the holidays." Marie added that would even being doing a show on Christmas day.
