- Story Text: Designer Marc Jacobs went full steam ahead on the last day of the Pret-A-Porter shows in Paris on Wednesday (March 7) with a train rolling onto the catwalk.
Ever the romantic and paying homage to Vuitton's heritage of travel with its ubiquitous monogrammed luggage, Jacobs took the audience on a historical journey through fantasy, time and proportion.
"The passengers have a chequered past," read the French house's notes about the collection, "They arrive, with a vast amount of baggage, from a journey begun somewhere in the countryside travelling to this grand edifice in the city."
Jacobs intentionally played with proportions, elongating the silhouette into an exaggerated A-line, with tall hats and long coats adding length to the body. And with a charming finishing touch of short porters carrying the models' oversized Louis Vuitton bags, only adding to the tallness of the silhouette.
Coats were worn over dresses which were worn over cigarette trousers, the skirt-trouser combination seemingly a big trend next season, as also seen on the Chanel catwalk on Tuesday.
Sparkles, jewels and furs added to the further richness of the clothes, which were developed and applied by expert craftsmen.
Bags also took their cue from the past with handbags larger than life and hat boxes, vanity cases, and weekend bags making their way back into the accessories line.
"I think it's such a feminine line without being that vulgar line of tits, ass and waist, so it just defines at a high waist and gently flares over the hip. And the pant, I thought was nice, the masculinity of the pant, but when you think of old swim costumes and pantaloons under crinolines, it's the way people used to dress. So, although now, it looks like layering and you could easily wear the pants without the skirt or the pants without the dress or the dress without the pants, it just gave the romance of another time, the silhouette of another time," Jacobs said, sitting in the carriage aboard the Louis Vuitton train he commissioned.
"Glee" actress, Dianna Agron, who said it was her first time to Paris Fashion Week, said the show was breathtaking.
"It just reminded me of -- first off, one of my favourite movies is 'Funny Face' when Audrey Hepburn's at the train and the smoke coming up. Just the way women used to dress and can still be incorporated now. It was romantic, it was glamourous and it made me excited for fall and we haven't even had spring or summer yet. But yeah it was just exquisite, it was exquisite," Agron told Reuters Television.
Chinese actresses Fan Bing Bing and Ni Ni also gave the show a thumbs up.
"He's very inventive you know, he's done so much for this great big house of Louis Vuitton. He has bring back something -- he was very clever using the thing from the past, always looking forward, always working with artists, with modern artists. It's very interesting and very alive," added French acting legend Catherine Deneuve.
The French label will be marking its 15th anniversary with Jacobs at the helm with an exhibition at the Louvre, also the setting of the Vuitton shows every season.
A party will take place on Wednesday previewing the exhibit, which is set to open on Friday. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
