Summary:On July 26 1956 a dramatic rescue operation followed the sinking of the Italian ocean liner Andrea Doria. The 29,000-ton ship went down in the Atlantic some 200 miles from New York after being in collision with a Swedish freighter. Hundreds of the Andrea Doria's passengers and crew were taken off by nearby ships. In all, 52 people lost their lives in the disaster.
