- Story Text: Newly elected German President Joachim Gauck received Russian President Vladimir Putin for a courtesy visit in Berlin on Friday (June 01), shortly after the Russian president held talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Gauck, who holds a largely ceremonial role, welcomed Putin at the German president's official residence, Schloss Bellevue castle, a short drive from the chancellor's office.
Gauck, a 72-year-old theologian from former East Germany, was elected German president on March 18 of this year after his predecessor, Christian Wulff stepped down.
Putin was expected to continue his first foreign trip to Paris where he was to meet French President Francois Hollande later on Friday. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
