- Story Text: Pierce Brosnan is in the mood for love.
The actor stars in Danish director Susanne Bier's Toronto and Venice film festival entry "Love is All You Need", which tackles tough topics with humour and warmth.
In the movie Brosnan plays Philip, a middle-aged Englishman living in Denmark who has tragically lost his wife. He is on his way to his estranged son's rushed wedding in Italy when he literally bumps into the mother of the bride, Ida, at the airport. Ida is a recovering breast cancer patient whose husband has just left her for a younger woman. After a difficult start, the two are drawn to each other at the shambolic wedding of their children.
Brosnan, who lost his first wife to cancer, said he had been touched by the movie script and that he could identify with his character.
"The script really touched my heart, I loved the joy of it, I loved the sadness of it, I loved the romance and me, my own life, being a father, having lost a wife to cancer...to fall in love with this woman who has breast cancer," he told Reuters Television in Venice after the film's world premiere.
In the film, Brosnan stars alongside a Danish and Italian cast.
"Susanne really intrigues me. I had seen her film In a Better World that year, last year, the winter last year and my agent called me and said 'she wants you for a movie called The Bald-headed Hairdresser, that title alone was kind of intriguing. And then I read it and I said 'yes'. Then I got a little apprehensive because I wasn't sure how I was going to fit in with Danish actors," Brosnan said.
"It was wonderful. I mean, I went to Copenhagen and we sat around a kitchen table with all these actors and they just welcomed me, you know, actors are universal," he added.
Brosnan has been happily married with his current wife Keely Shaye Smith for over ten years.
He said his wife's support and understanding had been key to keep the marriage going.
"I just like the girl. She makes me happy and I like to make her happy. And we have beautiful boys, 11 and 15. And she supports me, she allows me to go off and do these movies and travel. Go off and kiss beautiful women. She calls it 'legal cheating'. Legal cheating...she said that a dinner party one night and I just about gagged on my potatoes. So, you have to just love longer, you know, because it's not easy. But that time will come where I don't kiss the girls, I'll sit there as an old man and go 'how are you'," he said.
Fifty-nine-year-old Brosnan, whom many still remember best for his portrayal of the British secret agent James Bond said that while he was starting to feel his age, he was keeping his head up high.
"I just celebrated my 59th year on earth so, pushing 60. Some days I feel it. Some days I look it. And then other days just shoulders back, head up and crack on. It's a joy. It's a joy to live life. Very grateful. If I had to go tomorrow, I've lived a good life," Brosnan said.
