- Story Text: A beautiful collection of American photographer Richard Avedon is to go on sale in Paris.
The photographer, who died in 2004, is a major 20th century artist and has portrayed many of the icons of the last century, from Picasso, Marcel Duchamp and Francis Bacon to Brigitte Bardot and The Beatles.
"He is the author of iconic pictures of the 20th century, 'Dovima', the picture behind me is a very good example of a very famous picture by Richard Avedon. He has met and photographed everyone," said Matthieu Humery the photography specialist at Christie's.
Avedon's portraits are known all around the world and sixty prints will be up for grabs from expected prices of 5,000 to 600,000 euros.
"We'll see, I think it will be succesful. There are only quality pieces, some have often never been seen before, there are all sorts of prints at different prices, some small prints are valued between 5,000 and 7,000 euros and the for more important ones like 'Dovima' behind me estimated between 400 and 600 thousand euros," said Humery.
Born in 1923 in New York, Richard Avedon went through a comfortable child-hood. His father taught him early the basis of photography, a move which would change his life.
After World War 2, avedon joined the Harper's Bazaar magazine and is sent to shoot for the first time the French haute Couture collections.
Experts say he revolutionised fashion photography.
Avedon, in the style of a photo reporter, photographed models in other settings than simple studios such as department stores, gardens and night clubs.
The total sale, organised by Christie's in paris and taking place on Saturday (November 20) for the Richard Avedon Foundation is estimated between three and five million euros. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
