- Story Text: The greatest band that never was, rock parody Spinal Tap, went head to head with heavy metal giants AC/DC as the shortlist for Classic Rock magazine's Rock Roll of Honour was announced on Thursday (June 25).
The band created for the 1984 spoof rockumentary, This is Spinal Tap, unveiled the contenders who will battle for a place in the annual hall of fame at a launch in London's Hyde Park.
AC/DC, who burst back into the charts last year with Black Ice, their first studio album since 2000, were nominated in three categories, Album of the Year, Band of the Year and Event of the Year.
They go up against Spinal Tap for the latter category after the release this year of "Back from the Dead" to mark 25 years since the film's release.
Iron Maiden also pick up a string of nominations for Band of the Year - Metallica, Faith No More and Kings of Leon are also vying for the title - Film of the Year and Event of the Year.
Kiss, The Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Anvil and the Woodstock festival are also up for Film of the Year category.
Newcomers to the classic rock scene The Parlor Mob do well with two nominations, the first for Best New Band - up against Chickenfoot, Diagonal, fellow label mates Steadlur, Crippled Black Phoenix and New Device - and second for the Album Of The Year category.
But they are up against fierce competition with opposition from not only AC/DC and Metallica, but also Guns 'N' Roses, Heaven and Hell, Dream Theater, Black Stone Cherry, Joe Bonamassa, The Answer and The Raconteurs. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
