Summary:During the last week of October 1956, a mass uprising against Soviet rule in Hungary had seemed to be succeeding in freeing the nation from Moscow. Instruments of communist government such as secret police were swept from power and a new head of government, Imre Nagy, promised free elections. But on November 2, the Russians replied by sending ten divisions of troops and 1,000 tanks into Budapest to crush the uprising. Hundreds died defending the capital and thousands more fled the country as resistance ebbed away. In Budapest and later in Prague, Moscow used overwhelming force to smash a bid for independence.
