- Story Text: Naomi Campbell and Nelson Mandela chose the Spanish city of Barcelona to host their star-studded concert and fashion show combination, "Frock and Roll", aimed at raising awareness for the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund and Foundation.
On a mission to raise awareness, supermodel Naomi Campbell and Mr Mandela flew into Barcelona for "Frock and Roll" - the catwalk show/concert conceived to augment the international profiles of Mr Mandela's Children's Fund and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
The Oval Palace in Montjuic was chosen as the venue for a glittering pre-event dinner party the evening before.
Crowds gathered to watch celebrities such as Miss South Africa and supermodels Elle MacPhearson and Kate Moss, arrive at the pre-event dinner party. Even the normally unflappable media clamoured to take a picture of the charity supporting supermodel when Naomi appeared from within the building.
The show was conceived and co-produced by Naomi with the help of Harvey Goldsmith, producer of Live Aid, one of the most successful charity concerts ever staged. The idea of the show is to promote the charities which were established by Nelson Mandela shortly after the 1994 South African elections.
The aim of both charitable institutions is to improve the quality of life of young people from impoverished backgrounds by offering assistance and training to children.
The concert/fashion show itself took place at the Palau Sant Jordi stadium. Naomi called on some of her friends from the world of fashion and entertainment to attract the public's attention to her chosen cause.
Appearing on the catwalk were Kate Moss, Elle MacPhearson, Helena Christiansen, and, of course, Naomi Campbell.
The models wore designs by Diesel, Gianfranco Ferre, and Alexander McQueen, all of which reflected the African theme of the evening.
Designs ranged from "Chic Afrique" denim and hotpants by Diesel to Ferre's animal prints and fire coloured "African dream" and Mcqueen's feathers and bandaged heads.
The exuberant rap star Wyclef Jean kept the musical side of the evening bubbling along with his version of House of Pain's, 'Jump Around', and a soulful version of Bob Marley's 'No Woman no Cry'.
Small flames from cigarette lighters appeared in abundance as Bono, the lead singer from U2, took to the stage to sing the band's single 'One'. With a little help from Wyclef, Bono wowed the audience with a rousing version of the U2 classic 'Bloody Sunday'.
The show finished with 'The Redemption Song', which turned into a "Mandela" chant from the crowd whilst the artists and models took to the stage, leaving the crowd with the lasting impression of a typical Spanish fiesta. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
