- Story Text: Iraq held huge celebrations on Wednesday (April 28) for the 55th birthday of President Saddam Hussein who's still firmly in power despite the 1990 invasion of Kuwait and the hardships his people have suffered under subsequent United Nations (U.N.) sanctions.
New statues and public portraits were unveiled in dozens of cities and towns and one million young people pledged loyalty in ceremonies around the country.
Saddam's half brother Ibrihim Al Harran and the Deputy Chairman of the Revolutionary Command Council, General Izzat Ibrihim, attended celebrations in Saddam's birthplace in Tikrit, in northern Iraq.
Saddam Hussein has been the strongman of Iraq's ruling Baath Party for more than 20 years and president since 1979 of what was once the world's second largest oil exporter. He led Iraq through a costly eight-year war with Iran and into last year's Gulf War. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
