- Story Text: Hurricane Matthew killed more than 800 people and left tens of thousands homeless in Haiti earlier this week before it skirted Florida's Atlantic coast on Friday (October 7) and plowed northward over waters just off Georgia.
The number of deaths in Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, surged to at least 842 on Friday as information trickled in from remote areas previously cut off by the storm, according to a Reuters tally of death tolls given by officials.
Countless survivors have taken refuge in schools and other buildings set up as shelters, but for many, supplies are running low.
The Haitian Red Cross and Catholic Relief Services delivered much needed supplies to some of the 750 people sheltered at the Liceo Claudy Muzu in the hard-hit Les Cayes commune.
"This afternoon we are at a professional shelter. We are giving them sheets and hygienic supplies so they have better living conditions," said Marie Claudette Regis, one of the Les Cayes three mayors.
"They are our brother and sisters and they're living in tough conditions. We have to help them. We are trying to get them out of these conditions," Regis added.
One woman staying at the shelter, Benita Muselais, said she was lucky to be alive after evacuating her home to ride out the storm here.
"The hurricane, thank God we are alive. If it wasn't for God or if we were in the house, we would have died," she said.
