- Story Text: Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said on Friday (October 7) during a visit to Ankara to meet his Turkish counterpart that a five-step proposal to end suffering in Aleppo has been submitted by Spain and France to the Security Council.
"The five proposed measures in order to achieve this objective are as follows: immediate cessation of hostilities in Syria, immediate cessation of all airstrikes and military flights over the city of Aleppo, urgent authorisation of the distribution of humanitarian aid to all besieged parts of the country, especially Aleppo, a report, requested from the United Nations Secretary General on the options available in order to improve the ceasefire, and finally to open up dialogue to urgently find a political solution to the conflict," Garcia-Margallo said.
The Spanish FM was speaking during a joint news conference with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, who earlier said that involving Shi'ite militias in an operation to drive Islamic State militants out of Mosul will not bring peace. Garcia-Margallo also met with Turkey's European Union Affairs Minister Omer Celik. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
