The Roman Catholic Primate of Poland, Archbishop Jozef Glemp has bee meeting with Pope Paul at the Vatican to clarify conditions for a Papal visit to Poland. The Pontiff has said he wants to attend the 600th anniversary celebrations of the Black Madonna of Czestochowa during the second half of August, but the Polish military authorities are known to be opposed to the visit if it coincides with the second anniversary of accords between the government and the independent trade union Solidarity, on August 31. The Black Madonna is an icon revered by Polish catholics as s symbol of their faith and nationhood. Hundreds of Poles in national costume greeted Archbishop Glemp with a traditional Polish song in St. Peter's Square on July 7. Later, Pope John Paul drove among the crowd in an open vehicle, and reached out to touch many eager hands. Members of the Polish community displayed flags and the banner of the now suspended Solidarity union. One young member of the group was invited to meet the Pope personally and was warmly embraced by John Paul.
