Whereas a concept car, it shows people that this is what cars could be, this is what can really actually properly do if we're given the space to do it." These are very special cars, they're released in a very limited run just to show this is what we can do, this is what we're going to charge and if you want it we'll let you know when you can buy it." - Story Text:Automakers unveiled their supercars at the Paris Motor Show on Thursday (September 29) boasting an array of high-tech and high-speed concept models, which partly attest to why it is one of the most visited car displays in the world.
French manufacturers did not shy away from putting forward some of their best designs, such as Renault with its TreZor prototype, allowing visitors to get a glimpse of what the future products of the brand could look like.
In the case of the TreZor, an electric powertrain can be found under the bonnet, a feature taken from Renault's electric racing team.
But such an innovative display at the Paris show is also a strategic move on the part of the French car maker, as Alex Goy, a senior editor at Carfection.com and Theroadshow.com, explained.
"They're headline grabbing cars that look good, that show what manufacturers can really do if they're let off the chain and don't have, say, physics or marketing to deal with," he said.
Other concept cars from big French automakers included the Citroen CXperience, seen by industry specialists to be a demonstration by the brand that it can square off with German makers such as Mercedes and BMW when it comes to high-end and executive cars. The CXperience is powered by a hybrid petrol-electric powertrain.
Car-show extravaganzas cost millions of euros as brands, especially luxury nameplates, strive to outshine one another.
Volkswagen supercar brands Bentley and Lamborghini dropped out of the Paris Motor Show as their German parent is reining in spending on auto exhibitions to cushion costs from its emissions scandal.
Despite the highly futuristic nature of this year's show, super luxury cars still remain the top favourites for some.
Italian supercar maker Ferrari showed off their 1.8 million euro LaFerrari Aperta. Ferrari said they would produce 209 LaFerrari Aperta special edition cars, 200 of which have already been pre-sold while the remaining ones will be kept in house for anniversary celebrations.
"Ever now and then Ferrari releases these very special cars that are there to celebrate certain things so the Aperta is there as part of the 70th anniversary celebrations of Ferrari, just as the Enzo was before, the F50 and the F40. These are very special cars, they're released in a very limited run just to show this is what we can do, this is what we're going to charge and if you want it we'll let you know when you can buy it," Goy said.
Japanese automaker GLM, created in 2010, presented a fully electric supercar dubbed the G4.
