- Story Text: U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said on Thursday (September 29) deeper trade ties between the United States and Mexico will help both economies to grow and President Barack Obama's free trade deal will keep them globally competitive.
Lew is in Mexico on the last stop of his Latin American tour to boost regional trade.
With U.S.-Mexico trade valued at half a billion dollars and in the face of protectionist rhetoric from Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, Lew told media in the Mexican capital it was important to protect trade between the neighbouring countries.
"I just repeated how important I think it is that we maintain the ties between our two economies, that we build our abilities to protect our systems from the kind of abuse that undermines both economic and security interests. And we will continue to work in a cooperative way with our colleagues here," said Lew.
Lew's visit comes amidst stiff opposition in the U.S. from presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton to the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The Obama administration and many business groups are pressing to build support in Congress for a vote after the November 8 election.
Mexico is a keen backer of the trade agreement but has played down any rupture in critics of the TPP in the U.S. derailing trade cooperation.
"It is a relationship that will naturally keep on strengthening and that will naturally continue to generate conditions for prosperity. I believe that the visit from Secretary Lew supports the conviction of the (U.S.) Treasury Department, that we continue to strengthen what we have been doing. That is how he are working at the (Mexican) Treasury, to take advantage all the areas for the exchange of dialogue," said Meade.
Lew and his Mexican counterpart also touched on U.S. cooperation with Mexico on combating financing of terrorism and drug cartels, admitted more work was needed to stem a rising flow of heroin and opioid drugs into the United States. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
