Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin on Monday (October 24) visited Mansu Hill in Pyongyang where statues of late North Korean leaders are situated.
The North's state-run television KRT on Tuesday (October 25) aired video of a Chinese delegation led by the vice foreign minister laying a wreath in front of statues of North Korean founder Kim Il Sung and late leader Kim Jong Il as a sign of respect.
Liu Zhenmin arrived in Pyongyang on Monday (October 24), North Korean state media reported. It is the first visit by a high-ranking Chinese official since February, according to Japan's Kyodo news agency.
"Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin, as the chief Chinese representative to the DPRK-China border committee, is leading a delegation to North Korea from the 24th to the 27th, and is co-hosting the third meeting of the DPRK-China border joint committee with Vice Foreign Minister of North Korea Pak Myong Guk. We will publish relevant information in time in regard to Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin's activities in North Korea," said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lu Kang at a regular briefing in Beijing.
Liu's visit comes as Washington and its allies urge Beijing to agree tough new United Nations Security Council sanctions against North Korea after it conducted a fifth nuclear test in September.
China is North Korea's main ally but is angered by Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile tests. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
