- Story Text: Together with a team of 200 volunteers and professionals Geneva baker and pastry maker Gilles Desplanches put together on Sunday (November 11) the world's longest "millefeuille" cake of 1,221 metres beating the current world record held since 1992 by Belgians.
"Well the current world record for the longest "millefeuille" belongs to Belgium, it was in 1992, and that measures 1,037.25 metres, so that's alot of "millefeuille". Today they're attempting the Guinnes World Record and they're gonna try 1,200 (metres) of "millefeuille"", adjudicator from Guinnes World Records, Anne Orford, told Reuters TV.
Baker Gilles Desplanches started the intial preparations for the world record attempt almost a year ago and has spent some 1,000 working hours the last couple of weeks producing the different parts of the "millefeuille" that consists of 3,600 metres of biscuit divided into three layers with a layer of milk chocolate cream and dark chocolate cream in between and topped with red icing.
"To try and quantify the "Millefeuille", I think we've spent some 1,000 working hours producing (the parts for the cake). And to give you an idea, we're going to produce 1,200 bags of cream, and in this "millefeuille", that will make 1,200 metres, there are three layers of biscuit, so we've had to make 3,600 kilometers of biscuit", pastry maker Gilles Desplanches told Reuters TV To make a millefeille this long, Desplanches needed some 875 litres of water and some 800 kilos of flour for the biscuits that weighed almost three tons and some 400 kilos of chocolate for the cream that weighed almost a ton.
"You have to know that this corresponds to 1 ton of biscuit, and for this we've used 800 kilos of flour and 400 kilos of butter, to give you some quantities. Since the begining o this week, we've started making the cream, and we're going to make chocolate cream because were in Geneva, and we've decide to make two creams - one of dark chocolate and one of milk chocolate. And to give you an idea, this corresponds to some 3 tons of cream of which 400 kilos are pure chocolate. We've worked with special Bolivian cocoa, and we're going to glaze our cake with a pink icing, the colour of breast cancer, with around 300 kilos of glaze", Desplanches told Reuters TV.
Hoping to reach some 100,000 Swiss Franc (approximately $ 105,000) Desplanches would donate the money raised at the sale of the "Millefeuille" to the Swiss breast cancer association ASAP/RCS.
"So every centimeter of "millefeuille" costs 1 Swiss Franc (approx $1,05), so we're going to sell pieces of 50 centimetres each, so we hope to raise a maximum of money, but it's also great to be able to gather this many people around this cause", Angela Grezet of the Swiss breast cancer association ASAP/RCS, told Reuters TV The "millefeuille" was put together and presented at the Geneva autumn fair by some 50 professionals and some 150 volunteers.
"I'm very happy, it's a beatiful adventure, it's a very good cause. Everybody is motivated, everybody is getting well along, so it's a beatiful day, we're happy", volunteer Romain Fleche told Reuters TV. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
