It was the same thing that on Tony night, when all four of the acting recipients in the musical theater category were all African American, and people asking me what that meant. And I didn't notice until afterwards. I guess what it means, what that night meant to me is that if some kid looks at that image, images are powerful, they give you the, images dare you to dream. When you can see it, helps you believe you can do it. So if some little kid sees that image of us holding our Tony awards, or holding our Princess Grace award, it gives them the willingness to dream for themselves then that is a beautiful thing." - Story Text: A gala fit for royalty took place in New York on Monday (October 24), when the Princess Grace foundation hosted its annual awards ceremony.
Named after actress turned-royal Princess Grace (Kelly) of Monaco, the night recognizes artists for their excellence in theater, dance and film.
Present at the gala ceremony were Prince Albert II of Monaco and his wife Princess Charlene.
This year, the foundation honored singer and actress Queen Latifah, Broadway star Leslie Odom Jr., and choreographer Camille Brown.
All three artists are of African-American descent, and Leslie Odom Jr., saw similarities with the Tony-awards ceremony during which he won the Best Actor in a Musical accolade for his performance in smash hit show "Hamilton".
"It was the same thing that on Tony night, when all four of the acting recipients in the musical theater category were all African American, and people asking me what that meant. And I didn't notice until afterwards," Odom Jr., the recipient of 2016 Princess Grace Statue Award, the foundation's highest honor, told Reuters.
"What that night meant to me is that if some kid looks at that image, images are powerful, they give you the, images dare you to dream. When you can see it, helps you believe you can do it," he added. Odom Jr. won the Princess Grace Award in 2002, which helped him pay his tuition bills during college.
Fellow Princess Grace Statue Award-winner Brown said: ""It means that we are here, and we are excelling, and beautiful and just amazing. And I am so honored to share this with other artists, other black artists."
The night's host was model Naomi Campbell, who called the duty "an honor".
The Princess Grace foundation was founded 34 years ago by Prince Rainier III of Monaco to honor his wife's legacy. The foundation's mission is dedicated to identifying and assisting emerging talent in theater, dance, and film by awarding grants in the form of scholarships, apprenticeships, and fellowships. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
