Summary:On July 14 1958 violent revolution swept Iraq's King Faisal II, seen here while visiting Amman earlier in the year, from his throne. In the army-led revolt, the King, the Crown Prince Abdul Ilah and Prime Minister General Nuri es-Said were all murdered. The existing union between Iraq and Jordan was denounced and the country was declared a republic under the rule of Brigadier Abdul Karim Kassem, later to become President.
