- Story Text: Storm preparations were underway on Monday (October 3) in Nassau as Hurricane Matthew intensified en route to Haiti bringing 140-mile-per-hour (220 kph) winds and torrential rain that could wreak havoc in Caribbean nations.
Monday afternoon was clear, but tourists were making plans.
"I feel for the Bahamian people. We're fortunate enough to be leaving tomorrow before the storm gets here but I pray that everybody's safe and it's not as bad as they're predicting," said American tourist Bob Navia.
Meanwhile, local residents were boarding up windows and stocking up on supplies.
"Actually my house right now - men are working at the house, putting up the shutters on the house and I'm getting some water and basic supplies, batteries and so forth. I'm just, minimally I'm preparing. But I think most of what I need to do if we get hit will come after the storm," said Nassau resident Amanda.
The center of Matthew, a violent Category 4 storm, is expected to close in on southwestern Haiti on Monday night, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. It has veered from Jamaica but the slow-moving cyclone is still forecast to bring gale-force winds and dump hazardous amounts of rain on the island. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
