- Story Text: Maccabi Tel Aviv made it six titles in eight years at the World Invitation Club basketball championship at Crystal Palace, London on January 4 with an exciting 134-115 victory over Polycell Kingston of England. Both sides had scored impressive semi-final wins on January 3. Maccabi brushed aside Sharp Manchester United of England 104-73 with Lee Johnson and Kevin Magee scoring 30 points each and Doron Jamchy adding a further 23. United's only real resistance to the reigning champions came from Tom Brown, who scored 17 points. English champions Kingston defeated U.S. champions Marathon Oil from Chicago 117-98 to clinch their place in the final. England international Martin Clark, formerly at Boston College in Massachusetts, scored 47 points as Marathon, seeded third in the tournament, never recovered from trailing 66-45 at the break. Kingston's American centra Dan Davis scored 23 points and teammate Steve Bontrager scored 24. Both played for the Evangelist team Athletes in Action in the State before joining Kingston in 1984. Top shooter for the Marathon side was Kevin Sprewer, from Loyola University, with 22 points. In the final, played on January 4, it was Maccabi's ability to ruthlessly punish every slip or moment's loss of concentration which finally broke Kingston. Even then it was only in the last seven minutes that the challengers were overrun with Kevin Magee scoring three consecutive baskets to open a 107-96 lead. Kingston's early nerves allowed Maccabi to gain a 5-0 advantage before Doug Lloyd opened the challengers' account with an offensive rebound and score. Kingston then moved quickly into gear, Bontrager and Andy Innell creating space inside the Maccabi defence. Maccabi replied with outstanding shooting by Micky Berkovitz. Kingston led throughout most of the first half until a late push of scoring 12-4 brought the champions 58-56 into the lead. Kingston still carried the fight to their opponents and drew level 63-63 at the break. In the second half, the teams remained neck and neck until Magee struck and Kingston's challenge fell away. Top scores for Maccabi were Kevin Magee with 36 points, Micky Berkovitz with 33 points and Lee Johnson who scored 25. For Kingston Steve Bontrager scored 37 points and Martin Clark 30.
