- Story Text:Uprooted trees and branches were cleared from Taipei's streets on Wednesday (September 28), one day after Typhoon Megi brought heavy winds and rainfall to Taiwan's capital.
Megi is the third typhoon to hit Taiwan this month and has killed at least four people and injured hundreds on Tuesday (September 27), knocking down trees and cutting power to millions.
Most schools and offices were shut and the north-south bullet train suspended services as Typhoon Megi, packing winds of well over 160 kph (100 mph), roared in from the Pacific.
Local shop owners were grappling with the losses inflicted on their businesses.
"This typhoon was so big, maybe it was the biggest in history. There were a couple of motorcycles that were toppled over. Taipei City was hit severely this time, it (the typhoon) was so big, so after consideration this typhoon might have been the biggest in history," said Huang Cheng-chou, who owns a scooter garage in Taipei.
Lai Szu-chi stayed at home while the typhoon was causing damage to the building she lives in.
"It felt like the whole of Taiwan was wrapped up by the typhoon. We were at home thinking that the windows will break at any moment that was an intense experience. We were also concerned as the water tank (on the roof) was blown away, because in the past the water tank had never been blown into the street. Also, the images of the water tank of a mall falling over were very scary," she said.
Schools and offices remained shut for a second day on Wednesday in major cities as the island's weather authorities advised that due to the large diameter of the typhoon, heavy rain and strong wind would not significantly abate until Wednesday afternoon. Financial markets also remained closed.
At least 329 people were injured and more than 14,000 evacuated, the government's Central Emergency Operation Center said late Tuesday. Authorities' also estimated more than three million households had lost power, while over 72,000 were without water.
Hundreds of international flights were cancelled or delayed, while train services, halted Tuesday, were also scheduled to be suspended until Wednesday afternoon. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
