- Story Text: A porn star and a former child actor were among the gubernatorial candidates featured on the TV game show "Who wants to be Governor of California?"
Even as Arnold Schwarzenegger sparred with fellow candidates in Sacramento on Wednesday (September 24), six of the more unusual candidates in the gubernatorial recall election appeared at the Los Angeles campus of the California State University for a game-show style debate organized by a U.S. cable network.
The field for "Who Wants to Be Governor of California? The Debating Game," included former child actor Gary Coleman and X-rated movie actress Mary Carey. The others were Trek Thunder Kelly, an artist who wears only the color blue every minute of every day; 70-year old Carl A. Mehr, the oldest candidate; 20-year old Bryan Quinn, the youngest candidate; and Nathan Whitecloud Walton, a son of basketball legend Bill Walton who plans to continue attending Stanford University to pursue an MBA if he is not elected.
Even though the program was conducted in a wry, tongue-in-cheek style, the candidates told Reuters they're glad to be part of the unusual political forum.
"People don't know that actors and entertainers are intelligent," said Gary Coleman. "I'm very intelligent, and I've thought about a lot of things about California in the last ten or fifteen years. Now I get to express those things and that's what makes running for Governor really cool for me."
Adult film actress Carey agreed, adding "This game show is wonderful for me, otherwise I wouldn't get to be in a debate right now. Now, I'm going to get my opinions out there and show everyone that I'm a smart, blonde, busty girl who's got lots of ideas to bring to the plate in California. Yay!"
The network billed the program as the first debate with a game show format. The first rounds were scored, with two candidates with the highest scores advancing to the final round. After a round of voting to be conducted by viewers over the internet, the candidate with the most votes will receive $21,200 (USD) from the network. That dollar figure is the maximum corporate campaign contribution allowed under state law.
