- Story Text: Rio Tinto showcased red, pink and blue diamonds from the Argyle Diamond Mine in Hong Kong on Thursday (September 20).
Known as the most exclusive diamond sale in the world, less than 0.03% of global diamond production in the is pink diamonds and almost all of them come from the Argyle Diamond Mine in Australia.
Argyle's Business Manager Josephine Johnson said that Hong Kong is the gateway to the key markets for their rare pink diamonds and it is they can spend the most time with potential bidders.
"We don't have enough diamonds to supply to the market. And I say that and I smile but it actually is our challenge. We have so few diamonds to sell globally, that we cannot satisfy the demand. And they will ask us for a 2 carat fancy vivid purplish pink and we have to wait for mother nature to provide us and we can't always guarantee each year that we'll have something quite like that," said Johnson adding that they have seen unprecedented growth in Chinese demand for rare coloured diamonds.
Canadian buyer, Dylan Dix said rarity was the most important factor in today's gem and jewellery market.
"I think these diamonds are some of - again - the rarest diamonds in the world. It's the ultimate luxury, people are looking for something that's different. They have white diamonds perhaps, and now they want something that is absolutely unique, that no one else has," said Dix.
This year , in addition to showcasing 56 rare pink diamonds, two red diamonds and 19 lots of blue diamonds, Argyle also showcased two heirloom pieces of diamond jewellery, a pink diamond tiara and a jade and pink diamond necklace, both with multi-million dollar price tags.
In 2010, a 24.78-carat pink diamond broke the world record, fetching 46 million U.S. dollars at auction. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
