Mexican indie-pop singer and composer Carla Morrison embarks on the "Amor Supremo Tour" (Supreme Love) in the US and Latin America. Morrison talked to Reuters about how her life and music career have changed after winning two Latin Grammys in 2012, being an independent artist and her take on presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
It's been 4 years since Morrison made waves with her album "Dejenme Llorar" (Let me cry) garnering 1 Grammy nomination and 5 Latin Grammy nominations, winning best alternative music album and best alternative song for "Dejenme Llorar."
"The Latin Grammy didn't change me, but it did change my life in a way that I got reassurance that I was doing something right and that's a great incentive, the fact that your work is acknowledged, as a woman, as an independent artist, as Mexican, to me it's very motivational," said Morrison who is also nominated for a Latin Grammy in the Best Alternative Music Album this year.
From her personal growth in the last four years to new album and tour "Amor Supremo", Morrison says, "I grew up, I lived great experiences. I'm from a very small town and I was never exposed to this craziness, travel, going to different countries, diversity, so I learned to live in a way that I'm not used to. I learned to see love in a different way and in a bigger way sort of speak, not only towards me, but from me to others."
Morrison launched her career as an independent artist in 2009 with the release of her album "Aprendiendo a Aprender." She was later invited to be an opening act for Mexican singer and composer Natalia Lafourcade, performing primarily in Mexico. Morrison said that the multitude of music platforms have made it easier for independent artists.
"I don't think that having a record label nowadays carries much weight, we have Spotify, Pandora, SoundCloud, there are many digital platforms out there that help you when you don't have a record label, I do have to say that record labels do a lot for the artist."
Declaring herself a feminist, Morrison says Hillary Clinton has all the credentials to be the next president of the United States. "I think Hillary is a great candidate, I think she could make a great change, she's been there through so many shitty times, tough times, just really bad and she's handled it with grace and intelligence."
Recently, Morrison collaborated with renowned American stars Macklemore & Ryan Lewis on the duo's latest album, "This Unruly Mess I've Made," providing Spanish language flourishes on the track, "The Train."
Morrison will be touring the US until the end of October and will continue her "Amor Supremo Tour" in Latin America in 2017. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
