- Story Text: Zamalek had no trouble beating Ismaili 3-1 to win the Egypt Cup in the Cairo Stadium on Friday (24 June). Zamalek could have comfortably doubled their scoreline but their shooting for goal was poor. The balance of strength was so much in Zamalek's favour that Ismaili got their only goal when their opponents had relaxed with a three-goal lead.
SYNOPSIS: Some 60,000 fans had turned up, most cheering for Zamalek.
After a first half in which Zamalek (in white and kicking left to right) had scored only one goal from numerous attacks, the favourites kept on the attack.
Experience was a telling factor. Zamalek had played for the Cup many times before, but this was Ismaili's first final. Now and then their players got rattled. The tension of the match was getting at them, and so, too, was the relentless pressure from Zamalek's forwards.
Inevitably, Ismaili's defence had to be breached again, their luck and battered defence could not hold out forever. In the third minute of the second half, Zamalek earned a corner kick. The ball floated across for left winger Ali Khalil to ram home a flying header.
The pattern of play remained unchanged and was likely to continue in this way because Ismaili clearly did not have the all-round strength or poise to snatch control of the game away from the now very confident Zamalek. Their supporters sensed victory. In the 71st minute it became 3 nil. Zamalek held possession to mount yet another fierce raid, sweeping swiftly goalwards. An exchange of passes had the Ismaili defence ready to split apart. The opening was probed for Ali Khalil to move into the right space for his second and Zamalek's third goal.
Though Ismaili gained a point from a goal late in the match, there was never any doubt who would win the trophy. General Hassan Allam, representing President Sadat, handed over the cup to the victorious captain Taha Bisri. This was the 16th time that Zamalek had won the coveted title. Their fans were in such high spirits that they even cheered the Italian referee.
