- Story Text: Matthew Perry takes his turn trying to make the jump from his role on the small screen in the hit television comedy "Friends" to the big screen in the new romantic comedy "Fools Rush In." His co-star is Salma Hayek, the woman who won Antonio Banderas' heart in the film "Desperado." Perry plays Alex Whitman, a straight-laced corporate type from New York who's sent to Las Vegas to supervise construction of a hip new nightclub on the famous Las Vegas strip. Never one to pay much attention to his personal relationships, Alex is taken by surprise when he meets Isabel Fuentes, played by Hayek, a fiery Mexican-American who believes in the power of destiny.
Several months after a brief one-night affair between the two, Isabel is pregnant and Alex finds himself meeting her family and her ex-boyfriend. During this process, the two actually fall in love and hurriedly decide to get married. The rest of the film asks the question, can two people who hardly know each other find love and happiness after they're already married? Adding to the confusion and difficulties are the cultural differences between Alex's family and Isabel's. Alex's parents are played by veteran actress Jill Clayburgh and John Bennett Perry, Matthew Perry's real-life father, who happens to be an actor with extensive credits of his own. Also in the cast is Jon Tenney, the real-life husband of "Lois and Clark's" Teri Hatcher. Tenney plays Alex's cynical best friend Jeff who is also temporarily living in Las Vegas during construction of the new nightclub.
The film's story is loosely based on the real-life experiences of the movie's producers Doug Drazin and Anna Maria Davis. Their courtship forms the basis of the romance between Alex and Isabel.
Both Perry and Hayek admitted they were a little nervous playing out the experiences of their producers.
This is Perry's first feature film since the huge success of the hit television comedy "Friends." All of the cast members of the show have tried making the shift to the big screen, some with more success than others. Most recently, Courtney Cox had a hit on her hands when she took a role in the Wes Craven thriller "Scream." But Matt LeBlanc bombed last spring with the baseball comedy "Ed" and David Schwimmer went mostly un-noticed when he played opposite Gwyneth Paltrow in the light comedy "The Pallbearer." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
