- Story Text: Russia's national carrier Aeroflot has introduced a team of especially bred sniffer dogs that it claims will be much more effective in sniffing out explosives and boosting the airline's security.
Aeroflot introduced the sniffer dogs after the September 11 terror attacks in America, though airline officials say it had been put together in May 2001.
The dogs are a mix of the Siberian Husky and the Central Asian jackal that were first bred in the 1970's for Soviet law enforcement agencies.
What makes the dogs so special and useful for airline security is their sense of smell - this is not affected by changes in season and they are able to sniff out for substances such as explosives in low temperatures that would normally crystallise odour gases.
"Main characteristics of this dog is a good nose, an excellent sense of smell, and also this breed of dog may work any time of year, all year, while the other dogs have variable sniffing ability depending on the season; the jackal being a sub-tropical animal has brought to this pedigree mix a permanent sniffing ability all year round," says Klim Sulimov, the breeder of the special dogs, who now also consults Aeroflot's security unit.
Aeroflot is currently using 10 of the dogs for baggage checks and checks aboard its aircraft, at Moscow's main international airport. But it plans to boost the numbers to
"In comparison to other dogs, for these animals to be led by a human handler is not the main thing, this breed of dog searches for whatever it has been trained for and they don't do it to please the handler - so this is a positive feature,"
