- Story Text: Indonesia police handed over a British woman to prosecutors in Denpasar, Indonesia on Monday (September 10), after she was arrested, suspected of smuggling drugs into the country.
Lindsay June Sandiford, 56, was arrested by custom officials at Bali's Ngurah Rai airport in May, 2012 after 4.7 kilogrammes of cocaine, worth 2.6 millions U.S. dollars, was seized from her suitcase, officials and police said. She had travelled from Bangkok to Indonesia.
Sandiford hid her face from the cameras with a newspaper as she was moved into the prosecutors office and then later into a car. Police formally lodged a case against the Briton on Monday, bringing her case closer to a trial.
Her lawyer, Nengah Sudiarta, said his client would be staying at a police prison.
"Today the police lodged a case for her trial, she is supposed to stay at Kerobokan prison but for the time being she will stay at police prison," said Sandiford's lawyer, Nengah Sudiarta. He added his client was not "mentally ready" to stay in the prison but did not elaborate further on Sandiford's condition.
Sudiarta said no date had been set for the trial.
Indonesian police have vowed to crack down on illegal drugs smuggling in Bali, which they have said has become a hub for international narcotics distribution.
Indonesia has a maximum penalty of 12 years in jail for drugs possession, and smugglers can face the death sentence. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
