- Story Text: Egyptian presidential candidate, Ahmed Shafiq, a long server minister under ousted President Hosni Mubarak faced a barrage of protest as he voted on Wednesday (May 23) at a Cairo polling station.
He was among 50 million Egyptian voters, who are casting their ballots on Wednesday and Thursday (May 24) to elect a new president following a sometimes messy and protest-ridden transitional period under the rule of army generals.
Shafiq was facing sanctions over reported election violations, the Egyptian Electoral Commission said earlier in the day.
The body has submitted details of the alleged violations, which include that he campaigned after the official period of campaigning ended, to judicial scrutiny.
Despite having microphones thrust in front of him by a scrum of reporters at the polling station, at the Fatma Anan School in Cairo, Shafiq kept his peace.
As the walked away after he voted, some protesters threw shoes at him, a sign of disrespect in Arab culture. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
