- Story Text: The third most wanted Italian mafia leader, Paolo Di Mauro, appeared on Friday (January 29) at the Spanish High Court to testify about organised crime charges.
The judge of the High Court, Eloy Velasco, took statements from the Di Mauro and Luigi Mocerino, the two mafia leaders arrested in Barcelona on Wednesday (January 27).
Paulo di Mauro, 58, who had been on run since 2003, was arrested in a operation carried out by Interpol, Spanish and Italian police.
Italian police said he was the leader for the Contini clan in Naples and organised clashes against mafia families such as Mazzarella around the end of the 1990s.
Di Mauro was arrested after leaving lawyers' offices along with Luigi Mocerino who is accused of drug trafficking.
Di Mauro, who is due to spend 18 years in jail for links to the mafia, homicide and bearing illegal arms, escaped before being arrested last summer.
Mocerino had also escaped once from being arrested by Spanish police.
Di Mauro had been sentenced as organiser and executioner of ambush carried out in 1998 in the Poggio Reale jail which killed Francesco Mazzarella, Naples police said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
