- Story Text: Thousands of demonstrators marched through the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, on July 14, calling for the resignation of the Democratic Alliance government. The rally, organised by the Communist-backed CGTP trade union federation, came just 24 hours after parliament voted to abolish the military revolutionary council. This was the last bastion of the revolution which overthrew the Caetano dictatorship in 1974. The communist bitterly oppose what they see as the dismantling of the 1976 constitution, which was framed at the height of the country's revolutionary fervour. Speakers at the rally accused the government of mishandling the economy, and said living conditions for the workers were worse now that during 50 years of dictatorship. The rally was the latest in a series of demonstrations aimed at ousting the government before a new constitution is decided on later this year.
