Anti-government protesters set the national headquarters of the ruling Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo ablaze on Sunday (June 30), throwing petrol bombs and exchanging gunfire with guards in clashes that went into the early hours of Monday (July 1).
The attack came amid protests across Egypt calling for President Mohamed Mursi of the Brotherhood to resign, in which hundreds of thousands demonstrated on the first anniversary of his inauguration.
One of the witnesses of the night battle, Sameh Fahmy says that those inside the headquarters are heavily armed.
"This is not an office, this is the Muslim Brotherhood Fortress. They are firing live ammunition and no one can even pass in front of the building even when the ambulance tries to pass, they fire at it. The medics are scared of saving an injured because they say they might die, and then no one would be able to save them nor the injured," he said.
Sandbags were seen on the shattered windows of the building which were allegedly used as shelter for those inside the building.
One of the medics on the scene Mosaad Mohamed explained, "Until now, the amount of injured is one hundred and sixty eight wounded, forty of which were treated on the scene and the rest were sent to hospitals. There are 7 deaths caused by live fire. The injuries are all caused by live fire, puck shot pellets or the shrapnel of an unknown explosive."
Several provincial offices of the Islamist movement have been attacked in recent days, including others on Sunday.
Two men, including an American bystander, were killed when the Brotherhood's office in Alexandria was attacked on Friday (June 28) and dozens were wounded. The office was torched and ransacked. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
